SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Requirements
Minimum of 2.0 mL frozen serum
Minimum of 1.0 mL frozen urine
Supplies for Submission
  • Serum separator tubes (SST)
  • Plastic transport tubes
  • Sterile urine cup
Specimen Collection

Submit paired serum and urine specimens.

Serum
  1. Allow serum separator tube (SST) contents to clot in an upright position for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection.
  3. Label a plastic transport tube with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
    Label the tube as serum and indicate the source - required.
  4. Separate the serum from cells and transfer the serum to the tube and freeze.
Urine
Collect urine in a sterile cup and submit a minimum of 1 mL in a labeled transport tube. Freeze.
Storage Requirements
Frozen. Transport frozen.

Limitations
The Zika Virus by PCR test is for in vitro diagnostic use under the FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). This test has not been FDA cleared or approved.
