Supplies for Submission
  • CytoLyt®
  • Dacron swab
Specimen Collection
  1. Fill out the requisition with the required information completely.
  2. Label all specimen containers with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
  3. Moisten the swab with tap water. Insert the swab about two inches into the anal canal, and apply firm lateral pressure as it is rotated and slowly withdrawn.
  4. Immediately immerse the end of the swab in Cytolyt®. Vigorously agitate for about 15 seconds to release the cells. Discard the swab.
  5. Tighten the specimen container cap.
  6. Submit specimen and requisition.
Storage Requirements
Store specimens at room temperature (15 to 30°C) until transported. DO NOT freeze.

Limitations
  • Avoid using cotton swabs on a wooden stick for cellular harvest as these may break and splinter.
  • Using a brush as the collection device may cause more patient discomfort.
  • Allowing specimens to dry before fixation may give unsatisfactory results.
