Have the patient obtain a stool specimen by one of these two methods:
- Pass stool directly into a sterile, wide-mouth, leak proof container with a tight fitting lid, - OR -
- Pass stool into a clean, dry bedpan.
- After collection, patients should deliver specimens to the office as soon as possible.
- Transfer the specimen as soon as possible to Cary Blair transport medium. Add the specimen to the vial until the liquid reaches the fill mark.
DO NOT use toilet paper to collect stool. Toilet paper may contain substances which inhibit some fecal pathogens.
