SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Requirements
Minimum of 3.0 mL urine
Minimum of 1.0 mL serum; additional sample quantity is required if other tests are ordered.
Supplies for Submission
SST/Gold Top (1), Urine Cup (1)
Specimen Collection

Submit paired serum and urine specimens.

Urine
  1. During the collection period, refrigerate 24-hour urine and record the total volume.
  2. Mix urine and aliquot into sterile cup or container.
  3. Label container with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
  4. Record the total volume on both container and requisition.
Serum
  1. Collect whole blood in serum separator tube (SST) on the same day as when the patient returns 24-hour urine.
  2. Label SST with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
  3. Allow SST contents to clot in an upright position for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection and refrigerate.
