Cytopathologic evaluation for the detection and characterization of malignant cells in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Requirements
Obtain a specimen of at least 3 mL of CSF.
Submit the second or third sample for cytologic evaluation, if several samples are obtained.
Supplies for Submission
  • CytoLyt® (preferred) or 95% ethanol
  • Specimen container
Specimen Collection
  1. Label all specimen containers with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
  2. Fix the specimen with at least an equal volume of CytoLyt® or 95% ethanol immediately.
  3. Tighten the cap and mix the contents thoroughly.
  4. Write the type of fixative used on the requisition.
Storage Requirements
Store specimens at room temperature (15 to 30°C) until transported. DO NOT freeze.

Limitations
Specimens submitted in incorrect fixative (such as formalin) can only be processed as cell blocks.
