Specimen Requirements
24-hour urine
Supplies for Submission
Calculi Risk/Supersaturation Urine Collection Kit (ARUP supply# 46007); alternately 4 transport tubes.
Specimen Collection
- During the collection period, refrigerate 24-hour urine and record the total volume and collection time interval.
- Label aliquot/ transport tubes with two identifiers.
- Mix the urine and using the collection kit, aliquot as follows:
- 1st aliquot (pH 2) – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into a Sulfamic Acid tube. Mix well and freeze immediately.
- 2nd aliquot (pH 2) – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into a Sulfamic Acid tube. Mix well and freeze immediately.
- 3rd aliquot (pH 9) – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into a Sodium Carbonate tube. Mix well and freeze immediately.
- 4th aliquot – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into an Unpreserved tube. Freeze immediately.
- If collection kit is unavailable, submit four 4-mL aliquots of 24-hour urine.
- Record the total volume and collection time interval on the tubes and requisition, and transport to the lab.
Storage Requirements
Critical Frozen (CFZ)
Specimens are stable if frozen for 2 weeks.
Causes for Rejections
Specimens stored at room temperature or refrigerated specimens are not accepted.
