SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Requirements
24-hour urine
Supplies for Submission
Calculi Risk/Supersaturation Urine Collection Kit (ARUP supply# 46007); alternately 4 transport tubes.
Specimen Collection
  1. During the collection period, refrigerate 24-hour urine and record the total volume and collection time interval.
  2. Label aliquot/ transport tubes with two identifiers.
  3. Mix the urine and using the collection kit, aliquot as follows:
  4. 1st aliquot (pH 2) – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into a Sulfamic Acid tube. Mix well and freeze immediately.
  5. 2nd aliquot (pH 2) – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into a Sulfamic Acid tube. Mix well and freeze immediately.
  6. 3rd aliquot (pH 9) – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into a Sodium Carbonate tube. Mix well and freeze immediately.
  7. 4th aliquot – Transfer a minimum of 4 mL into an Unpreserved tube. Freeze immediately.
  8. If collection kit is unavailable, submit four 4-mL aliquots of 24-hour urine.
  9. Record the total volume and collection time interval on the tubes and requisition, and transport to the lab.
Storage Requirements
Critical Frozen (CFZ)
Specimens are stable if frozen for 2 weeks.
Causes for Rejections
Specimens stored at room temperature or refrigerated specimens are not accepted.
