Minimum of 4.0 mL plasma

Specimen Collection

Protect sample from light during collection, storage, and transport.

  1. Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells immediately.
  2. Label a plastic transport tube with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
    Label the tube as EDTA plasma.
  3. Transfer plasma to the tube, using a plastic transfer pipette.
  4. Freeze - send this aliquot separately when multiple tests are ordered.
Storage Requirements
Critical Frozen (CFZ)
Specimens are stable if refrigerated for 8 days or frozen for 2 months.
Causes for Rejections
Specimens stored at room temperature are not accepted.
