Minimum of 2.0 mL serum

Specimen Collection
  1. Allow serum separator tube (SST) contents to clot in an upright position for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection.
  3. Label a plastic transport tube with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
  4. Transfer serum to the tube and refrigerate.
Storage Requirements
Refrigerated.
Specimens are stable if stored at room temperature for 1 week, refrigerated for 2 weeks, or frozen indefinitely.
Causes for Rejections
Plasma specimens or specimens with the following conditions are not accepted:
  • hemolysis
  • lipemia
