Minimum of 4.0 mL 24-hour urine

Specimen Collection

Protect sample from light during collection, storage, and transport.

  1. During the collection period, refrigerate 24-hour urine and record the total volume.
  2. Mix urine and aliquot (8 mL preferably) into plastic aliquot tube.
  3. Label tube with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
  4. Record the total volume on both container and requisition.
  5. Freeze - send this aliquot separately when multiple tests are ordered.
Storage Requirements
Frozen
Specimens are stable if refrigerated for 4 days or frozen for 1 month.
Causes for Rejections
Specimens stored at room temperature are not accepted.
