SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Requirements
Obtain washings during bronchoscopy where small aliquots of saline solution are washed over a directly visualized area and removed with suction.
Supplies for Submission
  • CytoLyt® (preferred) or 95% ethanol
  • Specimen container
Specimen Collection
  1. Label all specimen containers with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
  2. Fix the specimen with at least an equal volume of CytoLyt® or 95% ethanol immediately.
  3. Tighten the cap and mix the contents thoroughly.
  4. Write the type of fixative used on the requisition.
Storage Requirements
Store specimens at room temperature (15 to 30°C) until transported. DO NOT freeze.

Limitations
Specimens in incorrect fixative (such as formalin) can only be processed as cell blocks.
