Grey Top Sodium fluoride - whole blood (2-6); alternately SST/Gold Top (2-6)
Specimen Collection
- Label Grey Top tubes with two identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include patient’s name, date of birth, social security number, requisition number, and medical record number.
Depending on which time intervals are desired, label the tubes accordingly e.g., “F”, “2”, and “4”. - Draw a fasting sample in tube F. Indicate collection time.
- Give the patient a 75 g-dose of glucola.
- Draw the next sample e.g. 2-hr sample in tube 2, two hours after the patient finishes drinking the glucola. Indicate collection time.
- Draw the next sample e.g. 4-hr sample in tube 4, four hours after the patient finishes drinking the glucola. Indicate collection time.
- Continue drawing in a similar fashion for up to five hours, if desired.
Storage Requirements
Refrigerated.
Specimens are stable if if stored at room temperature for 7 days or refrigerated for 7 days.
